Video Poker History

The History of Video Poker is a rather short subject due to the fact that the game was only developed in the mid-1970’s. The reason for this is that although the game of Poker was already being played in many different forms, it was not until this time that simple colour computer monitors were developed that could be connected to solid state Central Processing Units (also called CPU’s). The very first Video Poker Machines looked nothing like their modern day counterparts. An image of the 1970’s style Video Poker Games can be seen below:

It was not until the 1980’s however that the first Video Poker boom occurred. This was thanks to the introduction of Draw Poker and the fact that many Video Poker machines were freely available to the public. The game became extremely popular in Las Vegas due to the fact that players could play in their own time and found a machine less intimidating than people sitting around a table in a casino.

From the late 90’s the power of the internet was used to bring the full force of online video poker to the fore and lovers of the game and casino operators have never looked back. As of January 2008 Online Video Poker players have access to hundreds of variations of the game.
