It’s pretty important to have a basic grasp of the main poker hands and their relative strength before you hit the tables, after all how are you going to win if you don’t know when you’ve got a winning hand?
Starting at the bottom then, a “high card” hand ranks below all other poker hands because it contains no useful combination of cards such as a pair or a straight and relies purely on the strength of its highest ranking card.
Next up, a “One pair” hand is, as the name suggests, a hand with a single pair of cards that rank the same. So, for instance, if you were dealt a 2 of hearts, a king of spades, a jack of clubs and 6’s in diamonds and hearts you’d have a “one pair” hand with a pair of 6’s. The strength of the hand is dependent on the strength of the pair, so a pair of kings would beat a pair of queens. A “two pair” hand is the same but with two pairs of cards that rank the same and a “three of a kind” hand would have three.
